·         Life of Omar Khayyam, author and poet

Before Islamic Spread
·         Persistent failure of Indian rulers to unite against aggressors, but were not fundamental challenges to the existing orders.
·         People who came to India seeked refuge, and blending in with the culture. They turned Buddhist or Hindu.
·         Hinduism: Open, tolerant, and broad to various religious devotion.
·         Caste system established who were closest to God and who were further away.

After Islamic Spread
·         Islam: committed to monotheism and said everyone was equal to the sight of god.
·         Many Muslims moved to India.
·         Indian Influences towards Islam:
o Scientific learning, math, astronomy, numerals of Hindu scholars (Arabic Numerals), dress, food, hairstyles, architecture
·         South Asia remained one of the least converted and integrated of all the areas Muhammad’s message had reached.
