Political, Social, and Economic Conditions Prior to Power:

-Camel nomadic tribes dominated.

-Byzantine and Sassanid Empires struggled to assert a greater control of nomadic tribes.

-Monotheistic religions (Judaism and Christianity) entered.

-Umayyad dominated Mecca, center of trade.

-Women had great freedom and high status. They played key economic roles.

-Men and women were allowed to have 1+ partners.

-Men had to pay the wife’s family.

-Men still dominated.

-Women could not have warrior status.

-A more stable life in towns caused women to be monogamous and men were still polygamists.

-They were poetic; no written language.

-Religion was a blend of animism and polytheism.

Ideology, Motivation, Goals:

-He was concerned about new forces in undermining clans.

-He was aware of new religions (aka monotheism)

-He was dissatisfied with living life of material gain.

-He meditated in the hills and forests of Mecca.

-He received revelations from Allah as of 610 or earlier.

Actions and Effects:

-Writing of the Qur’an by his followers.

-Threatened by Umayyads, he moved to Medina. This is the hijra.

Quraysh attacked, but Muhammad proved to be a leader and fighter.

Ultimate Victory:

-Muhammad and his followers signed treaty with Qurash in 620 that granted Muslims to visit the Ka’ba (shrine) in Mecca during the season of truce.
