Solomon- King of Israel

Solomon, is known to be king of Israel, according to the Hebrew bible, and is famous for his wisdom, wealth and writings. Solomon became the ruler in about 967 B. C. E. and was famous for his wisdom, wealth and writings. He was wildly known for his achievement of building the Holy Temple located in Jerusalem.

Solomon was the son of king David and Bathsheba, but he was no the oldest son. Adonijah, Solomon’s older brother, was supposed to become king but king David though Solomon should be the one to take over. Many people wanted Adonijah to be king, even son of Solomon’s closest friends. One day Adonijah went to Solomon to ask for his servant in marriage, Solomon saw this as a threat to over rule him so he had his brother killed. After he had Adonijah killed he banished some of his supporters from Anathoth. Solomon then followed rules his father had left for him.

Solomon soon began to gather major wealth and he controlled the whole region west of the Euphrates. Solomon’s kingdom gained strength through marital alliances. Solomon said he had 700 wives, but many say this number was exaggerated. Even though Solomon was young many looked to him for his wisdom. This first started when he had to deal with two women and the baby. Both women clamed to be the mother but after he used reverse psychology he was able to find the correct mother. After this many people would travel from far to get his advise. He ended up writing 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs.

Once Solomon’s Empire became peaceful he started on a new project. His new project was the construction of the Holy Temple. Solomon’s workers built the decorations, vessels, and the temple itself. The temple was made of stone and cedar and was overlaid with solid gold. The temple ended up taking seven years to build.

The downfall of Solomon came due to his old age. Solomon ended up dying in Jerusalem after being a ruler for forty years and was berried in the City of David. Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, took over the empire after his passing. Under the control of Rehoboam, Solomon’s empire did not survive and the kingdom ended up splitting in half. Everything Solomon had worked for had been destroyed when he past away.                                                                                                                                                                                  Essay By: Ashley O
