Time Period: 3500 B.C.E.

Location: Mesopotamia

Important Neighbors: Babylonians

Strengths:

The Sumerians were first to develop a human writing system. They used various pictures and shapes.  Reading and writing was a complex skill the Sumerians developed, along with steady art.  They also built statues to adorn temples of the gods. They formed some of the first monumental agricultural structures.  Sumerians had a complex agricultural system. They founded the “science of astronomy.”  Sumerians ran their civilization through city-states and started slavery.

Weakness:

The Sumerians had many strong points but a few weak points as well.  They had lost in battle, and became overthrown, so they had a somewhat weak military system.

Effect on Neighbors:

Their neighbors were the Babylonians, and they soon become the Akkadians. They were taken over by the Babylonians, but when they were the Akkadians, many Sumerian cultural practices were put into effect. 

Legacy:

The Sumerians would become a legacy for all their accomplishments. Their main reason for being a legacy would be for becoming the first civilization to create a writing system.  They might also be legacies for their discoveries in Astrology, Math, Science, and Agriculture.
