The Great Oral Tradition and the Epic of Sundiata

D. T. Niane

500-1450 C.E.

The society is organized under a king.

Family structures were giving the man the ruling of the house. They gave men the ruling because each part of their body was made to do something. For instance, men were said to iron arms.

The purpose of the Great Oral Tradition was to spread reasoning for griots. The purpose for the Epic of Sundiata was to show what each person and their duties were in their society.

The audience is the Mandingo people of Guinea.

The tone of the document is very meaningful, it is full of purposes.

The document is given in the point of view of D. T. Niane.

Data gave the orders to the troop. He decided that they would first head south, they would end up traveling around the Soumaoro’s kingdom.

Bias was show in different quotes. A sentence of one quote was, “No matter how small a forest may be, you can always find their sufficient fibers to tie up a man.” That sentence shows an opinion not an actual stated fact.

The assessment of validity is when the Sundiata and Soumaoro went to war against each other.
