Ideology, Motivation, Goals:
-           Strived to keep travelers and merchants safe.
-           Awe visitors by lavished public works projects.

Actions and Effects:
- Made greatest use of youths captured in Russia, and made them educated and convert to Islam.
- Abbas killed and/or blinded all who could succeed him which, in the end, was a bad idea because the Ottomans fell.
- Expanded commercial links with the English East India Company and the Dutch East India Company.
-Overcame borders of pre-Islamic times.

Short Term Effects:
-    Under his rule empire reached height of strength and prosperity
-    Set up workshops to manufacture silk textiles and Persian carpets.
-    Made an army of 40,000 and an elite body guard.
                                                                                                                                                                               
Long Term Effects:
-    Glory of his reign: building great mosques at his capital of Isfahan.
-    Had network of roads and rest houses built.
-    Founded several colleges.
